Narrator:

You have entered the fandom effect. A podcast with anime, video games, comics, movies and unlimited ideas, Back off humanoid. Each week a new guest will press Start and discuss how they're making their dreams come true. With your hosts Mark "The BushidoGeek" Helberg and Devon "Dreamy Kong" McVettie It's time to enter the fandom effect. Please insert 25 cents to continue. You have one play through better make it count.

Mark H.:

All right, welcome everyone to another edition of the Fandom effect podcast. Brand new week brand new episode as always, I am your better half the primary host, the Bushido geek, your guide to fandom, your Sherpa to the mystical world that we find ourselves in each and every day, trying to find something new to explore in. And I think we're good. I think we can jump in. There's really nobody else to talk.

Devon McVettie:

You know, this is like the whole like Luke Skywalker Han Solo situation.

Mark H.:

No, no

Devon McVettie:

Han is way cooler than Luke was.

Mark H.:

We've been over this Greedo shot first.

Devon McVettie:

That's true. Okay. I did shoot Greedo.

Mark H.:

Okay, as long as we're good now. But Devon, what's up, man? How's it going?

Devon McVettie:

Not a whole lot, Mark, you know, just working on a lot of hard projects outside in this 80 degree weather in Michigan. And we're casually getting some smoke from our northern friends as well coming down. So that's been pretty interesting.

Mark H.:

Yeah, no fun.

Devon McVettie:

But I am excited for today. We have a great guest for us.

Mark H.:

Its going to be Good.

Devon McVettie:

You know, she's been killing it right now with her with music and Twitch with her gaming. And overall, it has to be one of the nicest people I've ever met Mark. The other cool thing is that, you know, I've gotten a chance to get a little bit into her background and learned that she is a brain injury survivor. So she's doing this all while healing herself. And so it makes it even more impressive to me.

Mark H.:

Yeah.

Devon McVettie:

And so, without further ado, I'd like to welcome Tobey Kai to our podcast.

Tobey Kai:

Good afternoon, boys.

Devon McVettie:

How's it going, Tobey?

Tobey Kai:

It's going absolutely wonderful. I want to first and foremost apologize for all the smoke. We're sending your way. But I mean, we're also we're gonna send it really you know,

Devon McVettie:

I was blown away when they said that the haze outside today in Detroit is is not from fog. It's from smoke and then up north.

Tobey Kai:

Oh, yeah. I think we've got the worst air quality in the world right now. Not saying a lot. But did you see that picture I posted recently of my neighborhood.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah. Straight up looks like a big old fog like an eerie movie.

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, I feel my heart goes out to one that has asthma right now. But I love that Star Wars reference right there. In the beginning. I can see I found my people.

Mark H.:

Oh, yeah. The amount of references we will jump into inside tangent into and then remember, like, wait, what was our main topic? And then now forget it. We've already gone too far.

Tobey Kai:

It is now the main topic. Perfect. Yeah, I think a train of thought is so overrated. That's like so 2020 scatter plots are the new thing. Let's go.

Mark H.:

Yeah

Devon McVettie:

We like to call it casual brainstorming.

Mark H.:

Yeah. Just without a topic or a jumping point or brainstorm?

Tobey Kai:

Casual Brainstorming?

Mark H.:

Yeah.

Tobey Kai:

So what are What does amateur or professional brainstorming look like? I'm just wondering,

Devon McVettie:

Professional brainstorming is one single topic. And amateur is based around like, you just throw the word.

Mark H.:

Like Word clouds.

Tobey Kai:

You have this all figured out. I love it.

Mark H.:

Oh, yeah.

Tobey Kai:

Oh, sorry. You're supposed to be asking the questions. I am ready!

Devon McVettie:

Well, Tobey like I kind of mentioned the beginning world has been full of different adventures and new, you know, new things that you're trying all the time. But we kind of wanted to know, like, you know, if we can learn a little bit about who you are, and you know, what makes Tobey Kai tick.

Tobey Kai:

Literally, or....

Devon McVettie:

I mean, yeah.

Tobey Kai:

Well, for everyone that doesn't know I do have tics. So I grew up with with with mild tics. And I had a brain injury in 2018. On a ski hill, I was snowboarding. I hit a patch of eyes landed on my back when did myself and a presumably drunken skier, went ahead and skied right through my skull while I was laying there. So that has exacerbated my condition. So I do actually have ticks but let's talk about the other tick. I spent the first nine years of my life in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I you eventually moved to Calgary, Alberta. And from there, I've been traveling the world up until COVID Started. My background is in biology. So I went and spent a lot of time in academia and studied bachelors in biology as well as the bachelor in economics and then continued on to study five years and become a licensed acupuncturist.

Devon McVettie:

Wow

Tobey Kai:

I don't do any of that. I'm a musician, and a streamer.

Devon McVettie:

Isn't it funny how that life goes?

Mark H.:

Life Goals!

Devon McVettie:

Like?

Tobey Kai:

Absolutely. I think one day I'm going to sit down with with my family and show them what I do. They don't they have never been to my stream. But I think it will be very interesting for them to see and go, you know. So this is what you went to school for, as..

Devon McVettie:

Who is this deep voice bearded man that gets on the Twitch and goes, good morning.

Tobey Kai:

This is your business partner? Well, that's a whole new can of worms.

Devon McVettie:

Well, I mean, you know, you know, I've heard your story. You know, I just started following you on Twitch couple months back. And we've got a chance to game with each other a couple times. And I brought Mark along now, and he's gotten a chance to get to know you as well, and all your music and stuff and being being a person who can tell you that I personally went to college for graphic design. And now I'm working in a completely different field. And marks went into sports and..

Mark H.:

yeah,

Devon McVettie:

Works in sales. It's like, you know,

Tobey Kai:

Its definitely the New Age way of going about things. Like, let's take the biggest detour possible and see who wasted the most time doing things that are completely irrelevant to what we actually are going to do with the future. It's a flex,

Mark H.:

how much money can I can I spend when not utilize it at all?

Tobey Kai:

Right? Eventually, we're gonna have to have like, Chevron's on our sleeves for how much student loan we have, you know, just yeah. Run around that clout.

Devon McVettie:

You know, you got that big piece of paper that's worth, you know, X amount of student loans.

Mark H.:

Yeah.

Devon McVettie:

Perfect

Mark H.:

Yeah. Which is buried in some box that I don't know where so.

Tobey Kai:

Mine currently is leveling out the coffee table, so

Mark H.:

We're putting them to pretty good use, pretty good use.

Devon McVettie:

Marks just keeps all his comic books dry on the bottom? That's

Mark H.:

Yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, that again, those are probably worth more at this point.

Devon McVettie:

Could be

Tobey Kai:

I could see Mark using them to like dry leaves and flowers and press them in between them.

Mark H.:

Shhh I have a reputation.

Tobey Kai:

I'm sorry.

Devon McVettie:

Oh, so what, um, so how did you actually get your start into becoming a musician and, you know, become to the point where you're at now, currently.

Tobey Kai:

That is a long winded story. I'm gonna try to keep this short. So I started playing competitive piano; classical piano as a kid cuz I'm Asian. And that's just what you do. Which made me hated it. I absolutely hated it. I wanted to sing so badly. Eventually, when I grew up, I decided to study opera. And from there, I started writing my own music. It wasn't until my accident in 2018 that I full throttle invested myself into music because I couldn't work. I couldn't move. And that was probably one of the only things I could do. Besides being an absolute beast on Skyrim still haven't beaten the game, but that doesn't matter.

Mark H.:

I don't think you ever do.

Devon McVettie:

As you can scream it as many dragons as possible. And that's

Tobey Kai:

Oh, yeah, that's why I had an Xbox 360 and Kinect, so I mean, I think the entire neighborhood heard me screaming,(spell from skyrim).

Mark H.:

I mean, that's kind of the only way that's the proper way to do it.

Tobey Kai:

Absolutely.

Devon McVettie:

Honey, that girl down the street is yelling at a TV again.

Tobey Kai:

They're probably wondering what language I'm speaking in.

Mark H.:

And then eventually, it's just some nerd organza. No, it's fine. Mom, she took she took an arrow to the knee. She'll be fine.

Tobey Kai:

She'll be okay.

Devon McVettie:

See, anytime I hear competitive piano playing though, I always picture like this, like two big grand pianos on the same stage and two people are just like looking at each other about playing with it. Oh yeah, tense look at each other and they're fighting.

Tobey Kai:

So extra.

Mark H.:

That's what I would want. But like really like extrapolate it like turn it into like a giant spectacle. Like every time you make mistakes, some guy like runs over and steals one of your keys off your piano and,

Tobey Kai:

or like a part of your piano burst into flames.

Mark H.:

Oh, that'd be nice.

Devon McVettie:

Or you just straight up was like, run off a year piano because the other person is winning. He just like side, kick him right in the face. And he's just like,

Tobey Kai:

yeah, just go over there and toss his piano. Just flip it upside down.

Devon McVettie:

I would totally be into that.

Mark H.:

Just go Back to like, casually playing like, Well, I think I won.

Unknown:

I don't ever want to be in a competition with you

Devon McVettie:

Whatttt?

Unknown:

To tons of fun.

Devon McVettie:

That's how that's how we get top spots in the war zone. We just we don't we just have nonstop competition going on.

Mark H.:

Still haven't played like the two games even played the most with Warzone and valor and I still have not have not played

Devon McVettie:

Its sad

Tobey Kai:

They're both free.

Mark H.:

Yeah. And I looked into getting valor like I have it all like set up. I just have it like,

Tobey Kai:

You're like, I don't play free games.

Mark H.:

I just haven't clicked play. Yeah. So with your you know, with your music, career Heading, Heading just controllably like straight up. I mean, this, this is the other building mountain that I keep saying, we actually have a new CD that's going to be coming out soon.

Tobey Kai:

Right

Mark H.:

You made a huge announcement about it on your stream.

Tobey Kai:

Massive,

Devon McVettie:

Massive. I mean, this is like Empire State Building meets, you know,

Tobey Kai:

oh, yeah,

Mark H.:

man, that was an opportunity to go Deathstar and you just completely blew it.

Devon McVettie:

But that's round. It's not like Tall.

Mark H.:

It doesn't matter? You're saying big, like, big announcement as in massive as in the size of a planet? And we made a Star Wars reference earlier?

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, but then we can't keep adding on to it mark.

Mark H.:

Yes, we can. That's the whole point.

Devon McVettie:

You disgust me.

Mark H.:

You know, you blew it,

Devon McVettie:

you blew it. I don't wanna hear it. But But tell us a little bit about this new CD coming out.

Tobey Kai:

It's the aftermath 2021 album. I've been working on this album for about two years now. It's been quite a long time in the making. And a lot of this was written actually during my required cell recovery, but during the heaviest, most difficult part of my recovery. So it's almost like a roadmap of how far I've come. You can see my mind state in my mind set through this album change. And my first album was written for charity. So the first song is Who are you, I dedicated that to Alzheimer's, dementia and memory loss awareness. Fun fact, I wrote that song before I went and lost my own memory. In fact, I was on the hospital bed when the master of that song came out. And I laughed so hard, because I was like, Who is this? And what is this? Who wrote this? But then afterwards, I listened to it and went, this is pretty bang on. I mean, now that I've lost my own memory, like kudos for writing this from an ignorant place about something you have no idea what you're talking about. And now as someone who has suffered a memory loss and a brain bleed. You did okay.

Mark H.:

Yeah,

Tobey Kai:

You know, it made me feel like I was a prophet too, because I went, I wrote a song about it, and it happened. So what do I do? I finished the four albums with veterans awareness, but I dedicated a song time to veterans and their families, as well as the song for environmental conservation, but I wrapped up the album with a song about breast cancer so guess what I'm doing every day?

Devon McVettie:

What check in yourself?

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, yeah, the first one came true. So I'm a little worried.

Mark H.:

Oh, yeah. Yeah, I can say you're kind of like if I do have powers this was a bad choice.

Tobey Kai:

I need to write a song about getting rich or something.

Devon McVettie:

There you go.

Mark H.:

Yeah. like winning the lottery like and then yeah, it's kind of see what happens

Tobey Kai:

Right? Or you know, dreaming or writing a song about the American dollar going back up. How about that?

Mark H.:

Well, I mean things things yeah.

Tobey Kai:

Latest song from Tobey Kai Cha Ching.

Mark H.:

Yeah.

Devon McVettie:

I would love it worked out perfect. Somehow right. Me and mark in there though.

Mark H.:

Yeah. Yeah, like a quick foot note.

Tobey Kai:

Quick little cameo. I got you.

Mark H.:

Yeah.

Devon McVettie:

Well, that you know, as a person who actually had to deal with somebody who had Alzheimer's, I got a chance to listen to your song and it was just like, a it's such a deep feeling. And it means so much to me as well. Like it was just my grandmother was my best friend dealing with her while she had it was just it was really hard to deal in. That emotional came back listen to your song. So

Tobey Kai:

I'm sorry. Go through that. You're very welcome. This song was inspired by Minecraft. My late grandfather actually. A lot of the words in the song are things that he said to me verbatim. Young lady, are you lost? He thought he thought I was lost. Nine out of 10 times I'd come visit him. It was a difficult thing for me to deal with for sure. Yeah, so he inspired the song. But eventually The song became an anthem to myself almost. It's the only song that I have released that was written before my injury. So it's the only little bit of me that I hold. That is Toby. Alpha. And now I'm Toby 2.0 beta, who knows what version I am now. But we're always updating the firmware. So stay tuned.

Mark H.:

Yeah

Devon McVettie:

Probably as long as Xero keeps you on track. That's the best part. Right? So

Tobey Kai:

factual.

Devon McVettie:

It's as I rolls, its desire rolls that keeps me on track, you start seeing eye rolls.

Tobey Kai:

The Twitchy eyebrow? Yeah.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah. Wait for him to finally rub that eyebrow right off, you know. So. So we have that coming out. I know that you're trying to figure out a few little things here. But and I know you hate to talk about it. But I'm gonna ask you, when you have your you have your big donation set up right now.

Tobey Kai:

I sure do.

Devon McVettie:

And we kind of want to have you talk about it a little bit. I know you don't like to, because you don't like to ask people for stuff. But

Unknown:

It was difficult for me to do that is for the week coming up to me unleashing that fundraiser goal. And the idea came from both my management, my mentor, as well as my colleagues who said they've all crowdfunded theirs on GoFundMe. So a lot of them had raised, you know, 50 60 100 grands on GoFundMe, and that was global. And they had this amazing, amazing support group that back then well, I don't really have a presence as of COVID. I don't tour now because of COVID. So it was very difficult for me to wrap my head around how I'm going to do this. And then it dawned on me that I have this amazing community on Twitch that has always been there to support me, but also who I care so much for. And I've never wanted to ask, because I know that my my Kai crew is more generous than they need to be. They are they have such big hearts when it comes to helping people. So my biggest fear is people extending themselves past what, what they're comfortable with, and what is responsible of them. So I always, always harp about that. And I know everyone gives me crap, because, you know..

Devon McVettie:

I know we're gonna make you cry again, arent we

Tobey Kai:

Doing really well. But, you know, in the end, I decided that's the way to go. GoFundMe is not the way to go, because I don't really have a lot of just everyday music fans from my tours. So I unleashed it on Twitch, as opposed to to a generic platform. And the support that I've gotten is absolutely mind blowing. I don't know what to do with that amount of love. And I'm constantly feeling like I don't deserve this. But I've worked my entire life. And I know that with every stream, I am trying to be positive, uplifting, and to be there for my community. So I'm trying to see this as a way for them to give back and to support our common goal to skyrocket the kai crew into I don't know, the stratosphere to be to be put on the map, right?

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, well, the crew is become a, become a family, the second family to you. And, you know, I could see that from day one. When I came in, it was like, you know, all these people donating and being friendly. And it's, even if you don't know, like, if you're, it's your first time in there, they instantly throw you a sub because they want you to, like get introduced on who you are, because they believe in you. And I could see that. And to be fair, I haven't seen a negative thing come out of you. Mind you, I doubt that there's anything negative about you, but

Tobey Kai:

Hold my beer.

Devon McVettie:

But that's the thing, like, from my point of view, I haven't really seen, you know, a non family atmosphere there.

Tobey Kai:

Thank you

Devon McVettie:

And it's been really great to see all the different things that you have available to I love

Tobey Kai:

That means the world.

Devon McVettie:

I love the fact that you guys do movie Saturdays to one of my favorite Yeah,

Tobey Kai:

I think it's awesome, because not everyone has access to movies, right?

Mark H.:

Yeah, cuz, I mean, because it's like between how expensive cable is and how everything is a streaming service now.

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, that and some things are just not available in certain countries. So yeah, considering it's COVID and we can't all sit in the same living room to watch the movie. This is basically the next best thing.

Devon McVettie:

So like lately, what are some of the things that you're, you know, the cat crew has been up to, besides obviously donate and stuff what is what are some of the big things that you've been doing lately on your twitch channel?

Tobey Kai:

Oh well I completely revamped my stream about five times so as everybody probably already knows, I came from mixer and mixer decided to implode the day that I made the quota for partners so I came over to twitch on the same day and just started grinding and I didn't really know what my direction was. I knew I wanted to connect with my fans. I knew I wanted to connect with people, but I wasn't sure how. As of January I started streaming first person shooter, competitive games and that kind of thing and I think I've started to get a little better at it. But there's a lot of work to be done. I started playing valorant recently and I I've realized that you keyboard and mouse people are absolute Gods

Mark H.:

Yeah, it's FPS as I grew up playing like Counter Strike when Counter Strike was like first getting going in all still play Halo. Like to this day periodically but yeah, there's like certain people where it's like, either you spend all your time doing it or not enough because it's just there's like there's there's so like, tiny little minor things that like make all the difference between you going like oh, and 15 and like, actually being able to get like a killer.

Tobey Kai:

It's so discouraging and then you want to play with people that are good, but then they drag you into these lobbies or it's just you know, insanity or you've got hackers ruining the game for Warzone now and it's

Mark H.:

yeah and I think that's I mean that we've gone through this before about like toxic fandoms or like games that don't regulate it enough and we run them we brought up League of legends as a pretty big example as a gay me and Devon used to be huge into but we stopped playing because of the community and

Tobey Kai:

right

Mark H.:

It's it's you don't really it's something some people kind of don't realize why like a community or certain people can kind of like just like turn you off from something that you want to do. But

Tobey Kai:

Yeah. yeah, no, the community is everything. I think for a lot of games for FPS not so much toxic death, comms are probably about as community as you get with that.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, I mean, we compared it to you know, bite from a, you know, hooded Cobra. I mean, it's just like, yeah, you take it down, and it's just like, the toxicity in that game is ridiculous.

Tobey Kai:

And it is ridiculous. And then those standards are so low when I get a death common. It's somebody saying like, Oh, nice shot, bro. There's tears in my eyes.

Mark H.:

Yeah. I think people underestimate the stuff that can actually like, impact you a little bit.

Tobey Kai:

Yeah. And you know, usually when you kill people, you get all kinds of, you know, like, bleep bleep bleep. And then you get the one guy that's just like, Damn, nice shot, bro. And I'm just like,

Mark H.:

thank you.

Tobey Kai:

I'm so sorry for killing you.

Mark H.:

Yeah, it's it's a short example. But like, I go back to like, when like, you guys remember like when Xbox like before Xbox got hacked, could get hacked really easily, like back like in the halo/ halo two era. And was doing like, really, I was like, I wanted to get better Halo. And I was like, on voice chat. And some random guy was like, he's like, No, he's like, he's like, I see what you're doing wrong. And like, brought me into a side room. And like one on one me for like, an hour to like, help me get better at the game.

Tobey Kai:

Oh, that's love.

Mark H.:

And that was like 15 years ago. And I still remember that. Because this was a game that I had really loved as a kid and wanted to get better at it. And someone took time out of their day to do that.

Tobey Kai:

It's so impactful. You know, why couldn't the gaming community just learn to be a little more empathetic? That's one thing I definitely like spreading is that positivity and making people feel welcome and appreciated no matter what their skill level is, right. And that's what I love so much about sub Fridays, you get to hype people up who are usually scared to play live or whatnot. And we've got a couple members of the community that are super new, and also a few that have disabilities and seeing them enjoy the game and not worry about disappointing their team is everything to me.

Devon McVettie:

I mean, I think it's pretty impressive to the point of like, like we have brave in the community who's he's deaf, and he's making these call outs in vallo. And I have to say he's probably one of the best players out like in the crew

Tobey Kai:

lands down. He got the game probably two weeks ago, maybe three weeks ago. And we were at first worried because we're thinking, Oh, no, I don't want to I don't want him getting frustrated, discouraged. Our whole community right now is learning American Sign Language, by the way. So that's great.

Mark H.:

You weren't even in chat yesterday when I was trying to sign to them. And it was I ended up trying to say that something about love, like Foddey in love and something like I was trying to talk about. Oh, that mean funny. We're talking about love and girls and stuff like that. And the way I signed it, I signed it wrong, and sending it up being me telling brave that FoddeyI love you And I'm like, I don't think that was correct. And he was just laughing on the other end of his Phone

Tobey Kai:

This your coming out of the closet moment.

Devon McVettie:

Oh, no, no, no, no,

Mark H.:

he did that. He did that to me months ago.

Tobey Kai:

Subtle.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, yeah.

Mark H.:

He probably did that months ago to me. Yeah.

Devon McVettie:

My wife is fully aware.

Mark H.:

his wife, his wife is aware

Devon McVettie:

Of our relationship. So she she's so good. That's good. Okay. As long as shee knows.

Mark H.:

Yeah, we're very transparent.

Tobey Kai:

I love it. Bromance. Gorgeous.

Devon McVettie:

Oh, yeah, it was great. But it was just so funny to watch. Braves face go from like, really puzzle to just laughing is like so hard, because he realized that I totally screwed up. And I was like, You know what, I'll just type it out for you. Bud like,

Tobey Kai:

either that or he's laughing because he knows that Brian straight.

Devon McVettie:

Could be that too.

Tobey Kai:

That's hilarious.

Devon McVettie:

Um, so in the fandom effect. We'd like to talk to our guests about different little walks of life that kind of bring them to who they are now. And that could be through video games or movies and music and whatnot. So we have to ask the big, big huge question. What are some of the biggest fandoms that Tobey's into?

Tobey Kai:

So I named my little brother after a red Power Ranger. So I'm gonna say that was probably a huge influence in my childhood. I think as a small child, that TV show made me realize that I am both an activist and a borderline Karen. You realize that they made the Asian Power Ranger yellow in that right?

Devon McVettie:

100%

Mark H.:

Oh, yeah, no, the original Power Rangers is all sorts of subtle racism.

Tobey Kai:

I thought it was hilarious. I was a kid. And as I grew up, I was just like, Wait a second. She looks the same whether she has her outfit on or off. That's not right. And the other girls the pink one and I'm going well, this sucks. I want to be the red one. So I named my brother after my brother's name is Jason. To this day, he will not let me live it down that I gave him one of the most common as he puts it white boy names on Earth.

Devon McVettie:

But I mean, it could have been worse. He just got

Tobey Kai:

could have been worse. Considering my parents don't didn't speak a whole lot of English back then. So he was at the mercy of my imagination. I could have named him after Sailor Moon or something.

Devon McVettie:

Oh, that'd be so bad as to have your brother being Tusk Tuxedo Mask. Like that was the name.

Tobey Kai:

I would Yeah. After someone in Sailor Moon, I probably would have named him after the cat.

Devon McVettie:

Well, it could have been worse. My sister wanted to name me Bambi. So it was a lot worse than it needed to be. You know, my parents just looked at her and said No, he can't be named Bambi Bambi was a girl. And so that was a little awkward moment for me when I grew up and find out to find out my name was almost bambi

Tobey Kai:

you were almost Bambi.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah,

Tobey Kai:

I feel like in today's hip hop culture that would be a badass name.

Mark H.:

Probably

Tobey Kai:

like coming to the mic. Bambi

Mark H.:

Wadd up Bambi

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna be like oh raylan one time let's go got Bambi on the mic let's go boy.

Mark H.:

Do it like eight miles like streetstyle rap and then you got it

Tobey Kai:

BBBB BAMBI

Devon McVettie:

growing up I mean like growing up to cheer I mean, obviously fandoms grow and they change and stuff. So was there anything that like nowadays you can just say like, I have to go like new one of like new episode of this is coming out or new movie of this is coming out or new game? Is there like a fandom that you're just like, I'm all about that.

Tobey Kai:

Oh, yeah. Huge battlefield fan. Really excited for that game coming out in October. Been a call of duty geek since basically Black Ops one maybe World at War. I'm I'm an Xbox console gamers. So I obviously went out and got the new console. I don't think I'll ever be 100% committed PC Gamer don't tell my fans.

Mark H.:

Oh, huge. Oh, yeah, we will totally tell no one.

Devon McVettie:

I'm just gonna. I'm just gonna put it in the crew like big news about totally. You'll have to know Friday,

Tobey Kai:

underlined

Mark H.:

massive underlines.

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, I know. I'm a huge Star Wars fan. Well, both. I'm a bit of a Trekkie and a Star Wars fan. But I'm more so the Star Wars fan.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, I know. I know. Xero got you your infamous lightsabers as well.

Tobey Kai:

Yes. Yes. That was such an amazing surprise. I wasn't expecting that.

Devon McVettie:

Now, did he get you a certain one or did he give you like your choices, Or how did that work out

Tobey Kai:

I get choices. So I actually get the entire rainbow of colors and it's it's pretty sick.

Devon McVettie:

Oh, that's awesome.

Mark H.:

I makes me want to get my Reverend cosplay going sooner.

Tobey Kai:

Cosplay party.

Mark H.:

Oh, yeah.

Devon McVettie:

I mean, Mark's gotta come back to Michigan in October so he can hit up Motor City Comic Con with me.

Mark H.:

Yeah, yeah, I gotta. Yeah, that was the first ever con i went to was, was Motor City like a couple years ago.

Tobey Kai:

Wow, that'd be great fun. I'm glad everything's finally opening up and we can do this stuff again.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, you guys have cons over there in Calgary?

Tobey Kai:

Yes, yes, you do.

Devon McVettie:

Okay, can you do attend any of them?

Tobey Kai:

Um, you know what? I hadn't before. And I think 2019 was the first year that I was completely geared up, wanted to go to the cosplay. cons, the Comic Cons, I wanted to scream fast and wanted to go to all of those. And of course, it couldn't. So I think this either this fall or next year, I'm gonna be hitting them hard. I have a lot of catching up to do. 13 years of academia make Tobey a very boring girl.

Devon McVettie:

There are a lot of fun, and they're even more fun when you get to dress up as somebody and yeah, it's up to you and goes, dude, I love your outfit.

Mark H.:

Yeah, yeah, you Yeah, like you try to tell yourself that you're like, Oh, I'm so tired of people taking pictures of me. But inside You're like my ego loves this.

Tobey Kai:

Right? You're like stroking harder reverse psychology. Come on now. Please don't take that photo.

Devon McVettie:

You know, sweating in that costume for eight hours. You're there. But yeah.

Tobey Kai:

That's your mess up. If you went to Princess Leia, you'd be fine.

Devon McVettie:

Shots Fired. Nobody wants to be this in a princess lay outfit.

Mark H.:

Yeah, even I don't know.

Devon McVettie:

No, it's my wife doesn't even want to see that. For sure. She's like, yeah, take that out.

Mark H.:

That's why we that's why we that's why we do Red Hood where we where all the layers.

Tobey Kai:

And for the nine season in a row, Devon is showing up as Jabba the Hutt.

Devon McVettie:

You know, it'd be perfect. I just got a mumble all day and just take pictures next to celebrities. It's perfect.

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, squishy. So yeah, no, I think those are my biggest fandoms I am a bit of a fan of sports as well.

Mark H.:

Okay.

Devon McVettie:

I mean, you know, are you a big fan of the you know, as everybody knows Canada's big fans of hockey. Are you one of those Canadians are you big fan of more of the other styles of sports. Um, I used to be a big fan of hockey. So I worked in a Cairo clinic for a little while and we were the designated clinic for the Calgary Flames. So I got to meet eigenli, his wife, Miikka kiprusoff in those people. And I thought that was the coolest thing. So then I started getting more and more into hockey because now there's this personal connection. I know these people and I need to see what they're like on ice and I found out they're pretty badass. But you know, as the roster changes, and the sport evolves, and every playoff season is different, I kind of fell off that bandwagon. As you know, I'm a Yankees fan. Sorry you just put a bad taste in my mouth. I bet.

Tobey Kai:

Oh snap.

Devon McVettie:

That's I mean, come on. You can't I can I can visually say like, there's some teams in baseball or like some teams and in hockey or baseball or football and stuff like that. Just put bad taste in your mouth and Yankees got to be one of them. And it's not

Tobey Kai:

We can not be friends.

Devon McVettie:

Okay, that's fine. That's fine, Tobey. I see how this.

Tobey Kai:

Yep, we're gonna wrap this up

Devon McVettie:

During baseball season. During baseball season, we're gonna just completely just not talk to anybody.

Tobey Kai:

No, they're not so it's over.

Devon McVettie:

It's like the lions for me, right? The lions. I'm a big fan of I know. And I 100% understand their complete shit. So it's the Tigers, Tigers complete shit. I understand that. Still a fan of it. But

Tobey Kai:

I like that you're loyal.

Devon McVettie:

Right? Well, to where I'm from. It's how we you know, I was always raised to be that way.

Tobey Kai:

I like that.

Devon McVettie:

And we get to talk shit. You know? That's the best part. You can't talk shit unless you're from there.

Tobey Kai:

100%

Devon McVettie:

So well, you know, we're gonna start wrapping up here, Toby. So I do want to ask you where can people find find you at like what what are the different socials and different areas that people can actually if they wanted to listen to you or listen to music or see you or anything like that? Where can they find you at?

Tobey Kai:

Sure. So I'm on all streaming platforms, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Google title Deezer. I Heart Radio, you name it. I always say the easiest way is really just to Google my name with the platform you listen to music on. There's like 127 that I'm released on and I'm pretty sure if it's out there. I'm on it. As for my socials I have a YouTube. I'm going to be releasing my music videos on there shortly. My new music videos for the aftermath albums as well as some behind the scenes stuff. My Instagram, I update daily as well as my Twitter everything is at Toby kai. I think my YouTube is. I am so Tobey Kai but if you put in Tobey on YouTube, it should pop up. I have a Facebook page as well. I think that one's Toby kai official. Tick Tock needs divine intervention like I don't know what I'm doing on there. What is Tick Tock even somebody's hiding?

Mark H.:

I don't know. I? I have no idea.

Devon McVettie:

Yeah, Mark does his dance on there. I don't we dont.

Mark H.:

Oh, yeah. Yeah, I mean, it's fun to dance on there. I just don't know. You know, I don't know. It might not even be set up. I'm probably dancing to myself.

Devon McVettie:

Irronically. It's the irronically it's the skimpy outfits. I've ever found out dude, so I don't

Tobey Kai:

Yeah, you won't wear a Prince's leah.... Well, okay.

Mark H.:

Yeah, yeah, you're the ones who bought me them so like.

Devon McVettie:

It was our supporters. I cant help it. Right.

Mark H.:

Yeah, sure. They they made you spend money on me?

Devon McVettie:

Okay, it was justin my bad.

Mark H.:

Well, that one makes sense. So well hey, tax write off dressing marking skimpy outfits.

Devon McVettie:

Worked. got it!

Tobey Kai:

Well, they do say that sex sells, Mark. So.

Mark H.:

I mean, I got I got to flaunt what I don't have right?

Tobey Kai:

Fake it till you grow it.

Devon McVettie:

I was gonna get into something but I know it's a total Tobey Kai like crewkai style thing and I'm not gonna get into that. You sit grow it and I was like, Oh, God, okay. So everybody listening out there. Please go out and listen to Tobey Kai's music. I swear, I let my wife listen to it showed her who Tobey was. And she was just absolutely blown away. The the pipes on this girl are ridiculous. I've never heard music like this before. And it's amazing.
